The 7.5 cm Pak 97/38 was a German combination of captured French artillery and a more modern anti-tank carriage. Following the 1940 campaign, many French 75 mm guns were available. The increasing threat of Soviet tanks led to the need to make this stock operational quickly.
The gun from the French Mle 1897 family was placed on the carriage of the 5 cm Pak 38. A muzzle brake helped control the recoil. The weapon used shaped-charge ammunition, among others, making its anti-tank effectiveness less dependent on a very high muzzle velocity.
The Pak 97/38 became available from 1942. It was an interim solution alongside more powerful, specially developed anti-tank guns. The older gun and ammunition had limitations in accuracy and performance, but the combination could be supplied relatively quickly.
