The North American P-51A Mustang was an early operational version of the Mustang family and marked a significant step in the development of one of the most famous fighter aircraft of World War II. Designed as a long-range fighter and tactical attack aircraft, the P-51A was initially deployed primarily by the USAAF in the Mediterranean and Asia.

The P-51A was powered by an Allison V-1710 engine, which offered excellent performance at low and medium altitudes, but was less suited for high-altitude combat. It had a top speed of approximately 630 km/h (390 mph) and was armed with four 12.7 mm (.50 caliber) machine guns in the wings. Thanks to its speed, range, and stability, the P-51A proved highly effective in ground attacks and escort duties at lower altitudes.

A total of approximately 310 P-51A aircraft were produced. This Italeri model is based on this early Mustang variant and clearly demonstrates how this design laid the foundation for the later, legendary Merlin-powered versions.
