P-47D Thunderbolt | 2835 | Italeri | 1:48
The P-47D Thunderbolt was a heavy American fighter and fighter-bomber that played a significant role in the air war over Europe and the Pacific during World War II. The D-variant was produced from 1943 onwards and became the most built version of the aircraft. The Thunderbolt was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine with an output of approximately 2,000 horsepower. Thanks to this powerful engine and robust construction, the aircraft could reach speeds of up to about 690 km/h and withstand significant damage during combat missions.
Its armament consisted of eight 12.7 mm Browning machine guns in the wings, providing exceptionally high firepower. Additionally, the aircraft could carry bombs and rockets, making it effectively used for ground attacks and supporting troops on the battlefield. This versatility made the Thunderbolt one of the most successful fighter-bombers of the war.
More than 15,600 Thunderbolts were produced. The aircraft was extensively used by the United States Army Air Forces for escort missions, interception flights, and ground attacks. In Europe, the aircraft played a major role in weakening enemy logistics and air defenses prior to Allied offensives. In the Pacific, the aircraft was also used for attacks on airfields, supply lines, and maritime targets.
The Thunderbolt was flown by famous pilots such as Francis S. Gabreski, one of the most successful American fighter pilots in Europe with 28 confirmed victories, and Robert S. Johnson, who shot down 27 enemy aircraft. The P-47 achieved an estimated kill ratio of approximately 4.6:1 during the war, partly due to its speed in dives, heavy armament, and strong armor. Pilots valued the aircraft for its ability to survive heavy damage and still return safely to base.
This Italeri model is based on this iconic fighter and represents one of the most recognizable American combat aircraft that excelled in both air combat and ground attacks during World War II.
