Mitsubishi Lancer GSR Evolution III "1996 Swedish Rally Winner" | 20407 | Hasegawa | 1:24
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III appeared in 1995 as a further development of the four-wheel drive Lancer for rally racing. The production car served as the basis for Group A homologation. Adjustments to cooling and aerodynamics helped the car remain competitive on increasingly fast special stages.
The two-liter 4G63 turbo engine worked in tandem with four-wheel drive. A large rear wing, modified bumpers, and additional air intakes gave the Evo III its recognizable appearance. The competition version received a modified roll cage, suspension, brakes, and drivetrain.
Tommi Mäkinen and Seppo Harjanne won the 1996 Swedish Rally with the Lancer Evolution III. On snow and ice, special tires and precise tuning were essential. The result marked the beginning of a season in which Mäkinen secured his first World Drivers' Championship.
The Evo III illustrates the close relationship between series production and rally racing during the Group A era. The car became an important part of Mitsubishi's sporting reputation before later Evolution generations introduced new technologies and body styles.
