Mitsubishi G4M2E Type 1 Attack Bomber (Betty) Model 24 Tei w/MXY7 Ohka Model 11 | 00550 | Hasegawa | 1:72
The Mitsubishi G4M was a Japanese naval bomber designed primarily for long range. The Allies called the aircraft Betty. Two Mitsubishi radial engines powered the slender machine, which could operate from land bases over vast maritime areas.
The G4M2E Model 24 Tei was adapted as a carrier aircraft for the Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka Model 11. This was a manned, rocket-powered suicide weapon. The Ohka was carried beneath the bomber and only released in the vicinity of the target.
After release, the Ohka pilot had to guide the weapon toward a ship and use the rockets for the final approach. However, its limited self-range forced the slow carrier aircraft to come close to the defended fleet. As a result, G4M crews suffered heavy losses before they could deploy their weapon.
This combination was used in 1945, including around Okinawa. The subject represents a poignant late-war phase in which Japan deployed crews for missions with no planned return. Its technical uniqueness cannot be seen in isolation from that human context.
