Mitsubishi A6M2b/A6M3 Zero Fighter Type 21/22 "Rabaul Ace Set" | 02437 | Hasegawa | 1:72
The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was developed as a long-range fighter for the Imperial Japanese Navy. The prototype flew in 1939. A lightweight design, a large wing, and an economical Nakajima Sakae radial engine gave the aircraft a combination of range and maneuverability that was very impressive during its early deployment.
In the early and mid-production versions depicted here, the armament consisted of two 20 mm wing cannons and two machine guns above the engine. To save weight, protection for the pilot and fuel tanks was initially limited. This became an increasing disadvantage against more powerful Allied fighters.
Zeros operated from aircraft carriers and land bases in China and the Pacific. As the war progressed, versions appeared with modifications to the engine, wing, armament, and protection. Production took place at Mitsubishi and Nakajima, resulting in over 10,000 aircraft.
The type became one of the best-known Japanese aircraft of the war. Its history demonstrates both the advantages of a very light design and its limitations in a prolonged technological race.
The Type 21 was an important early carrier-borne version; the Type 22 belonged to the A6M3 series with an improved engine. Rabaul became a central Japanese airbase in the South Pacific. The set connects these two versions with the intense air battles around that base.
