The Mazda Cosmo Sport was introduced in 1967 as a two-seater sports car with a rotary engine. Mazda used the model to demonstrate that this unusual engine technology was suitable for a production car. The low body and round taillights gave the Cosmo a unique look.
The later L10B appeared in 1968 with a longer wheelbase, a five-speed transmission, and a more powerful twin-rotor engine. The power increased to 128 hp. The compact engine ran smoothly and allowed for high RPMs, but also required specific solutions for sealing and durability.
The Cosmo was built in small numbers: 1,176 units of the original series were produced. Participation in the grueling Marathon de la Route at the Nürburgring in 1968 helped demonstrate the reliability of the concept.
The Hiroshima police version in this kit shows a rare service role for the sports car. It connects the local bond with Mazda to a vehicle that became best known as a technical showpiece. The Cosmo marked the beginning of Mazda's long-standing association with the rotary engine.
