The Macchi MC.205 Veltro was an Italian fighter aircraft used during World War II as one of the most modern and fastest Italian fighters. It was produced between 1942 and 1943 and was a further development of the MC.202 Folgore, equipped with a more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 605A V12 engine of approximately 1,475 hp. This allowed the aircraft to reach speeds of up to about 640 km/h and offered excellent performance at medium and high altitudes.

Its armament consisted of two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose and two 20 mm cannons in the wings, making it effective in aerial combat against both fighters and bombers. The combination of speed, maneuverability, and firepower made the MC.205 a formidable adversary in the air.

Approximately 200 units of the MC.205 were produced. The aircraft was deployed on fronts in Italy, North Africa, and the Mediterranean, playing a significant role in defending strategic positions and supporting ground troops. Pilots appreciated the aircraft for its reliability, handling, and precision in air combat.

The MC.205 is remembered as one of the most successful Italian fighter aircraft of World War II and earned the nickname Veltro, meaning greyhound, referring to its speed and sharpness.
