The Macchi MC.202 Folgore was an Italian fighter aircraft renowned for its excellent maneuverability and modern aerodynamic design during World War II. Produced between 1941 and 1943, it was a significant evolution of earlier Italian fighters. It was powered by a Daimler-Benz DB 601A V12 engine, built under license by Alfa Romeo, with an output of approximately 1,175 hp. This allowed the aircraft to reach speeds of up to around 600 km/h and delivered good performance at medium and high altitudes.
Its armament consisted of two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose. Later production series could be equipped with additional 7.7 mm machine guns in the wings. Although the armament was relatively light, its excellent maneuverability and speed compensated for this in air combat and escort operations.
Approximately 1,150 units were produced. The MC.202 was deployed on fronts in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Italian mainland. The aircraft played an important role in air defense, escort operations, and tactical support for ground troops. Pilots valued the aircraft for its reliability and precise handling.
The MC.202 is remembered as one of the most successful Italian fighters of World War II, known for its elegant lines and performance that rivaled modern adversaries. Its nickname Folgore, meaning lightning, referred to the aircraft's speed and striking power.
