The Macchi C.200 was an Italian fighter aircraft that played an important role in the early stages of World War II and represented a major step in the modernization of the Italian Air Force. Series XXI to XXIII were produced between 1940 and 1942 and were improved production series with refined aerodynamic characteristics and operational adaptations. The aircraft was powered by a Fiat A.74 RC 38 radial engine with a power output of approximately 870 hp, allowing speeds of up to about 500 km/h to be achieved.
The armament consisted of two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose of the aircraft. Although the armament was relatively limited, the aircraft was known for its excellent maneuverability, stability, and strong construction. These characteristics made the aircraft effective in air combat at low and medium altitudes and suitable for escort and air defense missions.
Approximately 1,150 examples of the Macchi C.200 were produced. The aircraft was deployed on multiple fronts, including North Africa, the Mediterranean, the Italian mainland, and the Eastern Front. The fighter played an important role in air defense and tactical support of ground troops, especially in areas where reliability and robustness were essential.
The Macchi C.200 was flown by various Italian fighter squadrons and was known as a reliable aircraft that performed well in difficult climatic conditions, such as the extreme heat and sandstorms in North Africa. Although the aircraft was later surpassed in armament and speed by more modern fighters, it remained valued by pilots for its excellent controllability and durability. The nickname Saetta, meaning lightning bolt, referred to the speed and striking power that the aircraft symbolized.
This Italeri model is based on this historical fighter and represents one of the most distinctive aircraft used during the early air operations of the Italian Air Force in World War II.
