M7 Priest Howitzer Motor Carriage | 6580 | Italeri | 1:35
The M7 Howitzer Motor Carriage provided American armored divisions with mobile artillery starting in 1942. The vehicle used components from the American medium tank family and carried a 105 mm howitzer in an open-topped superstructure. The British nickname "Priest" referred to the pulpit-like machine gun position.
The early M7 used a Continental radial engine. The artillery piece could provide indirect fire without first being detached from a prime mover. The crew had workspace around the howitzer but were not protected from above.
Priests saw action in North Africa, Italy, and Northwest Europe, among other theaters. They supported advancing troops and moved between firing positions to keep pace with mechanized units. Ammunition supply and fire control remained necessary in the process.
The design was further developed and remained in use after the war. The M7 illustrates how artillery adapted to faster armored formations. The primary goal was timely fire support, not direct engagement in tank combat.
