The M6 Gun Motor Carriage originated in 1942 as a rapid American solution for mobile anti-tank warfare. A 37 mm M3 anti-tank gun was mounted on the chassis of the Dodge WC-55. It was a relatively simple combination of an existing off-road vehicle and an available gun.
The Dodge featured four-wheel drive and a six-cylinder petrol engine. The gun was positioned at the open rear and faced backward. A shield provided the operators with only limited protection; the rest of the crew remained virtually exposed.
The M6 was used during the North African campaign. There, the 37 mm gun proved increasingly unsuitable against German tanks, while the high and open setup was vulnerable. As a result, the vehicle was poorly suited for the heavier anti-tank role for which it was intended.
Many vehicles were later stripped of their guns and deployed again as standard transport trucks. The short career of the M6 demonstrates how quickly combat experience could overtake an improvised design. The model represents an early phase in the American development of mobile tank destroyers.
