The M24 Chaffee was developed as the successor to the American Stuart light tanks. The first vehicles reached Europe at the end of 1944. The design combined a lower silhouette and better suspension with a more powerful gun than previous American light tanks.
Two Cadillac gasoline engines powered the vehicle. Torsion bar suspension improved its off-road capability. The relatively light 75 mm M6 gun offered useful firepower without requiring the weight of a medium tank. The crew consisted of five people.
Its primary task was reconnaissance and support, where mobility was more important than heavy armor. In the final stage of the war, Chaffees were used by American and, in small numbers, British units. Caution remained necessary when engaging heavy tanks.
A total of 4,731 units were built. After 1945, widespread export and deployment followed in areas including Korea and Indochina. The M24 shows how a well-balanced light tank could remain useful for a long time, even when its protection and gun no longer met the requirements for heavy tank combat.
