The Martin B-26 Marauder was an American medium bomber that first flew in 1940. Its streamlined fuselage and relatively small wings were designed for high speed. Power was provided by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engines.
The aircraft required careful training of its crew, especially during takeoff and landing. Improvements to the aircraft and training eventually made the Marauder an effective tactical bomber. In Europe, B-26s attacked bridges, railways, and other infrastructure, among other targets.
Last Marauder refers to the last B-26G built, serial number 44-68254, named Tail End Charlie. This machine left the production line in April 1945. It represented the end of a production program that had delivered thousands of bombers.
The aircraft subsequently went to the French Air Force and was used at the test center in Mont-de-Marsan for evaluation and transport. It was written off in 1949. This version therefore has a special history that makes the transition from wartime production to postwar testing visible.
