The SEPECAT Jaguar originated from a British-French collaboration that began in the 1960s as a project for a training and attack aircraft. The final design became primarily an aircraft for low-altitude tactical strikes. The RAF took the Jaguar into operational service starting in 1974.
Two Adour jet engines and robust landing gear supported deployment from relatively simple airfields. The British GR.1 featured two 30 mm ADEN cannons and could carry bombs, rockets, and auxiliary fuel tanks. Its slender wing and navigation equipment were tailored for high-speed flight close to the terrain.
During the Cold War, Jaguars formed a significant part of the British strike capability in Germany. In 1991, RAF aircraft flew against artillery and missile positions during the Gulf War. Later operations followed over, among other places, the former Yugoslavia.
The GR.3 upgrade introduced improved navigation, cockpit equipment, and precision targeting capabilities. This kept the Jaguar viable well beyond the period for which it was originally designed. The type left British operational service in 2007 and is regarded as an early example of successful European collaboration in the construction of military aircraft.
