The Dauphin II belongs to a French helicopter family developed by Aérospatiale and later continued under Eurocopter and Airbus. The twin-engine Dauphin made its first flight in 1975. The streamlined fuselage and the Fenestron tail rotor integrated into the tail became characteristic features of the design.
The SA.365F is a maritime version. The military AS.565 Panther was derived from the same family, including the AS.565SA for anti-submarine warfare. Two turbine engines, retractable landing gear, and specialized mission equipment made the helicopter suitable for reconnaissance and tasks at sea.
Depending on the version and operator, radar, submarine detection equipment, and torpedoes could be fitted. On naval vessels, such a helicopter increased the range of observation: the crew could investigate a contact at a distance from the mother ship and provide support in rescue operations.
