The Volkswagen Kfz.2 Typ 166 Schwimmwagen was a light amphibious reconnaissance and liaison vehicle of the German Wehrmacht during World War II. Developed from the Volkswagen Kübelwagen, the Typ 166 combined excellent off-road capabilities with the unique ability to cross waterways, which made the vehicle particularly valuable in difficult and water-rich terrain.
The Schwimmwagen was deployed from 1942 on all fronts, particularly on the Eastern Front and in Southern Europe, where rivers, swamps, and limited infrastructure made rapid movement difficult. The vehicle was used for reconnaissance, liaison, and light transport tasks, offering a clear tactical advantage over conventional light vehicles.
Technically, the Typ 166 was equipped with four-wheel drive, an air-cooled 1,131 cc four-cylinder boxer engine producing approximately 25 hp, and a foldable propeller at the rear for propulsion in water. Its top speed was about 80 km/h on land and 10 km/h in water. The light, open design provided excellent mobility but offered no protection against enemy fire or weather.
Approximately 14,000 units of the VW Typ 166 Schwimmwagen were produced in total. This Italeri model is based on this unique amphibious vehicle and forms a striking and historically accurate addition to dioramas and vehicle setups from World War II.
