The Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden Kai was a Japanese land-based fighter for the navy. Its design originated from the N1K1-J, which in turn had been developed from a floatplane project. The N1K2-J featured a lower-mounted wing and a simpler landing gear.
The aircraft was powered by a Nakajima Homare radial engine. Its armament consisted of four 20 mm cannons. Automatic combat flaps helped increase maneuverability during dogfights. The improved layout made the aircraft more practical than its predecessor.
Its Allied reporting name was George. The Shiden Kai was primarily deployed over Japan during the final phase of the war. The 343rd Kōkūtai, with experienced pilots and led by Minoru Genda, is closely associated with this type.
Production issues, engine reliability, and shortages of material and fuel limited its deployment. Consequently, the technically promising design could only participate in combat in limited numbers. The N1K2-J represents one of the final major developments of the Japanese piston-engined fighter.
