The Junkers Ju 52/3m, nicknamed “Auntie Ju”, was one of the most iconic and recognizable transport aircraft of the German Luftwaffe during World War II. Originally designed as a civilian airliner, the Ju 52 grew into the indispensable workhorse of the German air transport fleet and was used for almost every conceivable transport task.
The aircraft was known for its distinctive corrugated metal fuselage, robust construction, and reliability under harsh conditions. Powered by three BMW 132 radial engines, the Ju 52 had a practical cruising speed of approximately 210–230 km/h with operational load. It could carry about 18 fully equipped soldiers, paratroopers, or a similar cargo and was defensively armed with multiple machine guns for self-defense.
The Ju 52 played a key role in airborne operations in Poland, Norway, and especially during the large-scale deployment to Crete in 1941. In total, more than 4,800 examples of all variants were produced. This Italeri model is based on the legendary “Auntie Ju” and represents one of the most widely used and distinctive aircraft in military aviation history.
