Ju-87 G-2 "Cannon Bird" | 1466 | Italy | 1:72

The Junkers Ju 87 G-2, better known as the "Kanonenvogel" (Cannon Bird), was a specialized anti-tank version of the famous Stuka, developed for deployment on the Eastern Front. As the war progressed and the Ju 87 became too vulnerable to modern fighters, its role shifted from dive bomber to low-flying anti-tank fighter.

The G-2 clearly distinguished itself from earlier Ju 87 variants by its lack of a bomb load and dive brakes. Instead, it carried two 37 mm BK 3.7 cannons in underwing gondolas, specifically designed to penetrate the thin armor on the tops of Soviet tanks. Powered by a Junkers Jumo 211 engine, the aircraft reached a top speed of approximately 410 km/h (255 mph), sufficient for high-speed, low-level attacks.

The Ju 87 G-2 was made famous by pilots like Hans-Ulrich Rudel, who achieved numerous tank destructions with this type. Although production was limited to a few hundred examples, this variant represents a unique and highly specialized chapter in the development of the Stuka. This Italeri model is based on the Ju 87 G-2 and demonstrates how existing aircraft designs were adapted to the changing demands of the battlefield.
