The Ju 87 G-1 was a specialized anti-tank variant of the well-known German dive bomber, developed in the later stages of World War II. This version was deployed from 1943 onwards in response to the increasing presence of heavily armored vehicles on the Eastern Front. Instead of bombs, the aircraft was equipped with two 37 mm BK 3,7 cannons mounted under the wings, each loaded with armor-piercing ammunition. This heavy armament gave the aircraft exceptional firepower against ground targets.

Powered by a Junkers Jumo 211 engine with approximately 1,400 hp, the Ju 87 G-1 reached speeds of around 380 km/h. Due to the heavy cannons, the aircraft lost some of its speed and maneuverability, but it remained very stable during low-altitude attacks. In addition to the cannons, the aircraft had a defensive 7.92 mm machine gun for protection against enemy fighters.

Production of this variant remained relatively limited and took place between 1943 and 1944. The aircraft was primarily deployed on the Eastern Front, where it played a significant role in combating enemy armored formations and supporting ground troops. The G-1 became particularly known for specialized anti-tank operations where precise and targeted attacks were essential.

The Ju 87 G-1 gained international fame through its use by specialized attack pilots who focused on armored targets. The nickname Kanonenvogel (Cannon Bird) referred to its distinctive cannon armament and its specific role as a tank destroyer. The aircraft was remembered as a highly purposeful attack aircraft that, despite its limitations, could have a significant impact on a tactical level.
