The Ju 87 B-2/R-2 Picchiatello was a German dive bomber that played a significant role during the early phase of World War II. The B-2 variant entered production in 1939 and was further developed for improved performance and greater operational flexibility. The R-2 version was equipped with additional fuel capacity, giving the aircraft an extended range and making it suitable for long-range missions. The aircraft was powered by a Junkers Jumo 211D V12 engine with an output of approximately 1,200 hp, enabling speeds of up to around 390 km/h.
Armament consisted of two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns in the wings and one 7.92 mm MG 15 in the rear cockpit for defensive protection. The aircraft could carry a bomb load of up to approximately 500 kg, usually attached under the fuselage, sometimes supplemented with smaller bombs under the wings. Thanks to automatic dive brakes, the aircraft could perform highly accurate bombing runs, making it particularly effective in tactical support of ground troops and attacks on strategic targets.
Thousands of Ju 87 aircraft were built, with the B-2 being one of the most widely used variants. The aircraft was deployed during campaigns in Poland, Western Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean. The dive bomber played a significant role in rapid offensive operations where accurate air support was essential for breaking through defensive lines.
In Italy, the aircraft was nicknamed Picchiatello, referring to the steep dive attacks for which the aircraft was known. During early war campaigns, the aircraft was feared due to the combination of precision bombing and the psychological effect of the siren sound, the Jericho-Trompete, produced during dives. This reputation made the aircraft a recognizable symbol of tactical air support.
This Italeri model is based on this iconic dive bomber and represents one of the most distinctive aircraft that played a significant role in tactical air operations during the early stages of World War II.
