The Saab JAS 39 Gripen was developed as a compact Swedish fighter aircraft for fighter, attack, and reconnaissance missions. These three roles are summarized in the letters JAS. The prototype flew in 1988, and the first series was introduced in the nineties.
The Gripen combines a delta wing with canards and electronic flight controls. The C/D generation uses an RM12 engine, derived from the F404. The design is focused on rapid turnaround and maintenance by a relatively small ground crew.
The JAS 39D is the two-seater of the C/D generation. It supports training and operational tasks, with a second cockpit behind the pilot. The D must be distinguished from the older B and the later-developed F from the larger E/F family.
Sweden and foreign users brought the C/D generation into service. The Gripen shows how a country can develop a versatile fighter aircraft suited to dispersed deployment locations and limited support. The two-seater adds training and cooperation between two crew members to this capability.
