The Shenyang J-15 Flying Shark was developed as a Chinese carrier-based fighter aircraft. Its design is clearly related to the Su-27/Su-33 family, but the aircraft is equipped with Chinese systems and armament. Its first flight took place in 2009.
Two afterburning turbofan engines provide the propulsion. The large wings, canards, reinforced structure, and arresting hook are adapted for maritime use. Wing sections can be folded to save space on the flight deck and in the hangar.
Early J-15s took off via a ski-jump ramp and landed using arresting cables. This places demands on weight, fuel, and weapon load. The pilot must also account for a moving deck and limited landing space.
In 2012, the first known landings on the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning took place. The J-15 thus became crucial to the development of Chinese carrier aviation experience. The subject represents the development of a new maritime aviation capability, involving both technical and operational learning curves.
