The VTLM Lince is the Italian version of the Iveco Light Multirole Vehicle. The vehicle was developed at the beginning of the 21st century for patrols, reconnaissance, liaison, and other tasks where a light off-road vehicle needed to provide more protection than older designs.
The Lince features four-wheel drive, a diesel engine, and a protected crew compartment. During the design process, significant attention was paid to the effects of mines and explosions under the vehicle. The interior layout of the cabin and the mounting of the seats contribute to the protection of the occupants.
Depending on the mission, a weapon mount can be fitted to the roof. The vehicle supports small units, maintains communications, and transports personnel over roads and difficult terrain. Several countries have adopted variants of the LMV family.
Italian Lince vehicles were deployed in Afghanistan, among other places. The development reflects the lessons learned from peacekeeping missions and asymmetric conflicts, where patrol vehicles were exposed to roadside bombs and ambushes. The type marks the transition from the traditional military off-road vehicle to a vehicle where mobility and protection together define the design.
