Sd.Kfz. 182 King Tiger | 72005 | Italeri | 1:72
The Tiger II, also known as the Königstiger or King Tiger, was the final mass-produced German heavy tank of the Second World War. Henschel produced 489 units between 1944 and 1945. The vehicle combined a powerful 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71 cannon with heavy, sloped frontal armor.
A Maybach V12 petrol engine powered the tank. Five crew members operated the vehicle and its armament. Its strong protection and long cannon made the Tiger II dangerous at long combat ranges, but its high weight placed heavy demands on the drivetrain, bridges, and recovery equipment.
The tank appeared on the battlefield in 1944 and was deployed in Normandy, on the Eastern Front, and during the Battle of the Bulge, among others. Tiger IIs were typically assigned to independent heavy tank battalions concentrated at critical points.
Its operational value was limited by fuel shortages, maintenance issues, and low production numbers. As a result, while the tank could be a formidable opponent locally, it could not alter the course of the war. The model represents the advanced combination of firepower and protection with which Germany developed its heavy tanks in the final years of the war.
