The water tank for the S-64 is part of the development of the flying crane into a specialized firefighting helicopter. The original Sikorsky design from the 1960s was primarily focused on moving heavy loads. The clearance beneath the fuselage allowed for the mounting of a large tank.
Erickson further developed the Air-Crane for wildfire suppression. The aircraft can intake water via a snorkel system and disperse the load over the fire zone in a controlled release. This allows for multiple consecutive flights from a suitable local water source.
The tank is therefore an essential part of the mission equipment. It shifts the role of the basic design from lifting to firefighting, while the large rotor and powerful propulsion retain their utility. This model accessory captures this very civil evolution of the S-64.
