The Sikorsky HH-53C Super Jolly Green Giant was an American combat search and rescue helicopter. Its design was derived from the heavy-lift CH-53 transport helicopter. The HH-53 was developed during the Vietnam War to retrieve aircrews from hostile territory.
Two turbine engines powered the large rotor. The spacious cabin provided room for rescue personnel and rescued airmen. A winch enabled extraction where landing was not possible, while auxiliary fuel and an inflight refueling probe extended its range.
Protective measures and machine guns assisted the crew during hazardous approaches. The helicopters operated in coordination with escort attack aircraft, which attempted to secure the area around the rescue site. Such missions required precise coordination.
The HH-53C gained fame through rescue operations in Southeast Asia. Later developments within the H-53 family placed more emphasis on special operations and night navigation. The Super Jolly Green Giant represents the phase in which heavy helicopters took on a central role in the recovery of isolated personnel.
