SR-71 Blackbird (A Version) w/GTD-21B | 02395 | Hasegawa | 1:72

The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was developed in the 1960s for strategic reconnaissance at very high altitudes and at speeds above Mach 3. The aircraft originated from the secret A-12 program. The SR-71 had a two-person crew: a pilot and a reconnaissance systems officer.

The construction used a significant amount of titanium to withstand the intense heat during high-speed flights. Two Pratt & Whitney J58 engines worked in conjunction with carefully controlled air intakes. The fuselage and wings were designed for prolonged supersonic flight, with fuel also playing a role in heat management.

The SR-71 carried cameras and other sensors, but no armament. Protection came primarily from speed, altitude, and electronic countermeasures. From the 1960s onward, the aircraft gathered intelligence over or along areas that were difficult to reach with slower aircraft.

32 SR-71s were built. The Blackbird became one of the most famous reconnaissance aircraft of the Cold War. Its technical solutions demonstrated how far manned aviation could be developed before satellites and unmanned systems took over an increasingly larger share of reconnaissance.

The included drone refers to the related D-21 development. Historically, the D-21 was tested from the specially modified M-21, an A-12 variant; the later D-21B was launched from a B-52. This background should be distinguished from a regular operational SR-71 mission.
