The Mitsubishi F-2 emerged from Japanese-American cooperation and is based on the F-16, but underwent significant modifications. The first prototype flew in 1995 and its introduction began in 2000. Japan primarily needed an aircraft for air defense and anti-ship strikes around its own islands.
The F-2 received a larger wing, extensive composite materials, and Japanese avionics. An F110 turbofan engine provides the propulsion. The radar was among the early operational applications of an active electronically scanned array (AESA) in a fighter aircraft.
The single-seat F-2A and two-seat F-2B were produced for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. In addition to air-to-air missiles, the family can carry anti-ship weapons and other strike payloads. That maritime role aligns with Japan's geographic situation.
Production was limited to Japan's requirements. The type demonstrates how an existing foreign base design can be adapted to national requirements, proprietary electronics, and industrial cooperation. Despite the clear kinship, the F-2 is therefore more than just a Japanese-built F-16.
The F-2A Kai in this kit is a fictional further development. The additional tanks and targeting pod represent a possible configuration, not a separate operational production series with its own deployment history. The historical background above refers to the actually built F-2 family.
