Focke-Wulf Fw190D-9 "JV44" | 02539 | Hasegawa | 1:72
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 was a late development of the Fw 190 featuring a liquid-cooled Junkers Jumo 213 engine. Its longer nose and extended rear fuselage made it clearly distinct from the radial engine versions. Operational introduction began in 1944.
The new engine improved performance at higher altitudes. Armament consisted of two 13 mm machine guns above the engine and two 20 mm cannons in the wing roots. The D-9 remained a single-seat fighter with a sturdy landing gear and a robust basic construction.
The JV44 version refers to the protection of Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighters during takeoff and landing. At those moments, the jets were particularly vulnerable. Fw 190Ds guarded the vicinity of the airfield and attempted to keep enemy fighters away.
Distinctive undersurface paint schemes helped friendly anti-aircraft gunners recognize the protecting fighters. This late deployment in 1945 links two generations of combat aircraft: the further-developed piston-engine fighter and the new jet fighter, which still required support during its most vulnerable flight phases.
