Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-7/A8 | 1490 | Italeri | 1:72
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was developed under the leadership of Kurt Tank to complement the Messerschmitt Bf 109. The first prototype flew in 1939 and operational deployment began in 1941. The wide landing gear track and sturdy construction were practical advantages.
The A-series used an air-cooled BMW 801 radial engine. The cockpit controls were designed to reduce pilot workload. Cannons in the wings and machine guns above the engine gave the fighter a heavy armament.
Fw 190s were used for air combat, bomber interception, and ground attack. The various roles led to a wide range of armament and equipment packages. Heavier weapons and protection could increase the weight, with consequences for maneuverability.
The family was built in large numbers throughout the war and used on various fronts. The A-variants show the continuous improvement of a robust fighter before the longer, inline-engine Fw 190D appeared. The type remained one of the most important German fighter aircraft until 1945.
The A-7 and A-8 had heavier machine guns above the engine than earlier A-versions. The options in this kit are therefore suited to the late war years and intensive air defense against Allied bombing raids.
