The CR.42 Falco was an Italian biplane fighter aircraft developed in the late 1930s, and one of the last biplanes to be operationally deployed during World War II. It was powered by a Fiat A.74 RC 38 radial engine producing approximately 840 hp, enabling it to reach speeds of up to about 440 km/h. The design combined maneuverability with a robust construction, making it highly suitable for air combat at low and medium altitudes.
Its armament consisted of two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose, synchronized to fire through the propeller arc. Although the armament was light compared to later fighter aircraft, its excellent maneuverability compensated for this in dogfights against enemy aircraft.
Approximately 1,800 CR.42s were produced between 1939 and 1943. The aircraft was deployed on multiple fronts, including North Africa and the Italian mainland, playing a significant role in both air defense and tactical support for ground troops.
The CR.42 is remembered as the last successful biplane fighter aircraft and is known for its elegant lines and agility. Its nickname Falco, meaning falcon, referred to the aircraft's speed and precision.
