The CR.42 Falco was an Italian biplane fighter aircraft developed in the late 1930s and was one of the last biplanes to be used operationally during the Second World War. The aircraft was powered by a Fiat A.74 RC 38 radial engine with an output of approximately 840 hp, enabling it to reach speeds of up to about 440 km/h. The design combined maneuverability with a robust construction, making it highly suitable for air combat at low and medium altitudes.
The armament consisted of two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose, which fired synchronously with the engine. Although the armament was light compared to later fighter aircraft, its excellent maneuverability compensated for this in duels against enemy aircraft.
Approximately 1,800 units of the CR.42 were produced between 1939 and 1943. The aircraft was deployed on several fronts, including North Africa and the Italian mainland, and played an important role in both air defense and tactical support of ground forces.
The CR.42 is remembered as the last successful biplane fighter and is known for its elegant lines and maneuverability. The nickname Falco, which means falcon, referred to the speed and precision of the aircraft.
