F-35 B Lightning II | 92810 | Italeri | 1:48
The F-35B Lightning II was developed for short take-offs and vertical landings. This version is intended for users who need to operate from smaller aircraft carriers, amphibious ships, or limited airfields. The prototype of the B-variant flew in 2008.
In vertical flight, the F135 engine works in tandem with a shaft-driven lift fan located behind the cockpit. The rear exhaust can swivel downwards. Small lateral air vents help keep the aircraft balanced during this process.
In normal flight, the B functions as a jet fighter with a conventional wing. Internal weapons bays and integrated sensors are designed to limit radar visibility and provide the pilot with a broad view of the surroundings. This version became operationally available starting in 2015.
The F-35B follows earlier short-take-off and vertical-landing combat aircraft such as the Harrier. The design demonstrates how this unique flight method was combined with modern sensors and a shape focused on low radar visibility.
