The Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II is the conventional takeoff and landing variant of the F-35 family. The aircraft was developed within the Joint Strike Fighter program, in which several countries participate. The first F-35 flew in 2006.
An F135 turbofan engine with afterburner provides the propulsion. The design and internal weapons bays limit radar visibility. Radar, infrared sensors, and other systems process information into a consolidated image for the pilot.
The F-35A is intended for air defense, ground attack, and reconnaissance. In addition to internal missiles and bombs, external loads can also be carried under certain conditions. The A-version has a built-in 25 mm cannon and is designed for use from standard runways.
Series production takes place within an international program. Several NATO countries, including the Netherlands, chose this type as the successor to older combat aircraft. Its historical significance lies in the emphasis on sensor fusion and data exchange, in addition to traditional performance characteristics like speed, range, and payload.
