The Panzer III was designed in the 1930s as the primary German tank for combat against other armored vehicles. The tank had a five-man crew, allowing the commander to focus on observation and command. A Maybach gasoline engine and torsion bar suspension formed the basis of the later variants.
During the Second World War, the armor was incrementally increased and the armament changed. The limited space in the turret eventually set a limit on further increasing the size of the cannon. As a result, the role of the Panzer III shifted as heavier opponents appeared on the battlefield.
The type was widely deployed in North Africa and on the Eastern Front. Reliable radio communications and the division of labor among the crew were key components of the German style of tank warfare. Success also depended on reconnaissance, logistics, and cooperation with other branches of the armed forces.
Production of the tank versions continued until 1943, while the related chassis was used for longer for the Sturmgeschütz III. The Panzer III thus forms a link between the early German armored forces and the more specialized vehicles of the later war years.
The early Ausf. J from 1941 had a short 5 cm cannon and reinforced frontal armor. Later built J vehicles received a longer cannon. The designation "Initial Production" is therefore important for the armament and the historical appearance of this model.
