The Dodge WC-56 and WC-57 Command Cars were light American military vehicles used during World War II for command, reconnaissance, and liaison services. As part of the versatile Dodge WC series, these vehicles were known for their robustness, simplicity, and deployability under diverse conditions.
The WC-56 was primarily intended as an unarmed command vehicle for officers, while the WC-57 was equipped with a ring mount for a .50 Browning M2 machine gun, allowing it to also fulfill a limited defensive role. Both variants were widely deployed in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific and served, among other things, as staff vehicles for high-ranking Allied commanders.
Technically, the Command Cars were equipped with 4x4 drive, powered by a Dodge T214 6-cylinder gasoline engine of approximately 92 hp, which allowed a top speed of about 85 km/h. The open design offered excellent visibility and quick entry and exit but also meant limited protection against enemy fire and weather conditions.
In total, tens of thousands of Dodge WC vehicles were produced in various configurations, with the WC-56/57 playing a recognizable and iconic role within the Allied army structure. This Italeri model is based on these command vehicles and represents an essential but often underestimated part of the Allied war machine.
