De DO 217 K-1 en K-2 waren Duitse middelzware bommenwerpers die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden ontwikkeld als verbeterde uitvoeringen van eerdere varianten. De productie van deze versies begon rond 1942 en liep door tot 1944. Het toestel werd aangedreven door twee BMW 801 radiaalmotoren met elk een vermogen van ongeveer 1.580 pk. Hierdoor kon het vliegtuig snelheden bereiken tot circa 515 km/u en beschikte het over een operationele actieradius van ongeveer 2.300 kilometer, wat het geschikt maakte voor langeafstandsmissies.

De bewapening bestond uit meerdere defensieve machinegeweren die waren geplaatst in neus-, rug-, buik- en staartposities om bescherming te bieden tegen onderscheppingsaanvallen. De bommenlast bestond uit conventionele explosieve ladingen, maar de K-2 variant stond vooral bekend om de inzet van het geleide wapen Fritz X. Dit radiogestuurde precisiewapen werd ontwikkeld voor aanvallen op zwaar gepantserde maritieme doelen en betekende een belangrijke technologische vooruitgang in luchtbewapening.

Er werden enkele honderden exemplaren van deze varianten geproduceerd. De DO 217 K-1 en K-2 werden voornamelijk ingezet boven het Middellandse Zeegebied en de Atlantische wateren, waar ze deelnamen aan aanvallen op geallieerde scheepvaart en strategische maritieme operaties. Het toestel speelde een belangrijke rol bij precisiebombardementen en werd ingezet tegen zwaar verdedigde doelen.

De DO 217 wordt herinnerd vanwege de inzet van het geleide wapen Fritz X, dat wordt beschouwd als een van de eerste operationele precisiewapens. Deze ontwikkeling markeerde een belangrijke verandering in luchtmachtstrategie en wapentechnologie tijdens de oorlog en gaf het toestel een bijzondere plaats in de luchtvaartgeschiedenis.
