Cromwell Mark IV - Starter Set | 75004 | Italeri | 1:56
The Cromwell was a British cruiser tank that was deployed operationally in Northwest Europe in 1944. Its design featured a Rolls-Royce Meteor V12 engine, developed from the Merlin aircraft engine. This gave the tank high speed and good maneuverability.
The Mk.IV was equipped with a 75 mm gun and machine guns. Five crew members operated the vehicle. Christie suspension and a suitable transmission helped translate engine performance into off-road capability. Protection remained lighter than that of its heaviest opponents.
Cromwells were used by the British 7th Armoured Division and reconnaissance regiments of armored divisions, among others. Their mobility was put to good use during the rapid advance through France and Belgium. In close-quarters combat, cooperation with other tanks and infantry remained necessary.
The Mk.IV was the most common Cromwell variant. The type represents the British emphasis on fast cruiser tanks and marks a step towards the later Comet. The combination of engine power and a serviceable general-purpose gun made it suitable for various tasks during the liberation of Western Europe.
