The Fiat-Ansaldo L6/40 was an Italian light tank that entered production around 1940. The design was intended for reconnaissance and supporting fast-moving units. Its small dimensions made it relatively easy to transport, but limited the space for protection and armament.
A petrol engine powered the tracks. The turret carried a 20 mm Breda cannon and a machine gun. The crew consisted of a driver and a commander, who also had to operate the weapons. That division of labor limited situational awareness during combat.
L6/40s were used in North Africa, the Balkans, and on the Eastern Front, among other places. Against modern medium tanks, the cannon and armor were insufficient. The vehicle remained primarily useful for reconnaissance and tasks where light resistance was expected.
The chassis also formed the basis for the Semovente L40 da 47/32. The tank illustrates the limitations of Italian light armor development in a war where firepower and protection increased rapidly. Its deployment was partly determined by the shortage of heavier alternatives.
