The British Sherman III was the British designation for the American M4A2. The vehicle originated from the extensive Sherman production that began in 1942. Lend-Lease deliveries provided British armored formations with access to a tank that was available in large numbers.
The M4A2 used two coupled General Motors diesel engines. A welded hull, five crew members, and a rotating turret with a 75mm gun formed the basis. The gun could fire both armor-piercing shells and high-explosive ammunition, making it useful for a variety of combat tasks.
During the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943, Shermans supported the advance over roads, hills, and through built-up areas. The terrain and limited routes made cooperation with infantry and engineers important. Maintenance and supply partly determined how quickly the tanks could continue to advance.
The Mid Production version refers to a phase in the ongoing production modifications. The Sherman III demonstrates the international cooperation behind the Allied armored force and the deployment of American industrial production within British units.
