The Biber was a German single-person mini-submarine developed in the final phase of World War II as part of special naval assault units. Production began in 1944, when the need arose for small, relatively inexpensive submarines that could be used against Allied shipping in coastal waters and harbors. The Biber was approximately 9 meters long and was powered by a combination of an Opel gasoline engine for surface speed and an electric motor for underwater operations. This allowed the vessel to reach speeds of up to approximately 6.5 knots on the surface and about 5 knots underwater.
Its armament consisted of two external torpedoes attached beneath the hull, intended for attacks on transport and warships. Due to its small size, the Biber was difficult to detect, but its design also presented significant limitations. The submarine had a limited range, basic navigation systems, and was physically demanding for the operator to control, which affected its operational effectiveness.
The Biber was deployed by the Kriegsmarine during operations along the North Sea coast and in parts of Western Europe. The mini-submarines were primarily used in surprise attacks on Allied supply routes and harbor areas. Despite the innovative approach, operational results proved limited, partly due to technical problems and the harsh conditions under which the operators had to operate.
The Biber is known as an example of the experimental weapon systems developed in the later war years. Its compact design and the deployment of individual operators made the vessel unique within naval warfare, but at the same time highlighted the challenges of such specialized assault weapons.
This Italeri model is based on this extraordinary mini-submarine and represents one of the most striking experimental naval assault weapons used during the final phase of World War II.
