B-17F Flying Fortress | 1487 | Italeri | 1:72
The B-17F Flying Fortress was an American four-engine heavy bomber that played a central role during the strategic bombing campaigns of the Second World War. This variant was produced between 1942 and 1943 and represented an important step in the further development of the aircraft. The bomber was powered by four Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engines, each producing approximately 1,200 hp. This allowed the aircraft to reach speeds of around 510 km/h and provided an operational range of approximately 3,200 kilometers.
The armament consisted of multiple 12.7 mm machine guns placed in the nose, dorsal, ventral, waist, and tail positions. This heavy defensive armament gave the aircraft strong defensive capabilities against enemy interceptors. The bomb load could reach up to approximately 7,800 kilograms, making the aircraft particularly effective for strategic bombing of industrial and military targets.
Approximately 3,400 B-17Fs were produced. The aircraft was primarily deployed over Europe, where it participated in daylight bombing raids on strategic targets. Furthermore, it was also used in other operational theaters for long-range bombing and maritime patrols. The aircraft played a significant role in weakening industrial infrastructure and military capacity.
The B-17 is remembered for its exceptional ruggedness and its ability to withstand heavy damage while still returning safely to base. The nickname Flying Fortress referred to its heavy defensive armament and the imposing silhouette that made the aircraft a symbol of Allied air power.
This Italeri model is a detailed representation of this famous bomber and is a valuable addition for enthusiasts of military aviation and World War II dioramas.
