AH-64D Apache Longbow "J.G.S.D.F. Detail Up Version" | 07515 | Hasegawa | 1:48
The Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow is a further development of the American Apache attack helicopter. The base Apache entered service in the 1980s. The D-version received a digital cockpit, upgraded systems, and the capability to carry a radar above the main rotor.
Two turbine engines provide propulsion. The pilot and gunner sit one behind the other in an armored cockpit. A movable 30 mm cannon under the nose and weapon pylons for missiles and other munitions make up the armament.
The Longbow radar can help detect and prioritize targets, while other sensors enable observation in darkness. Not every AH-64D always carries the characteristic radar dome. The helicopter is intended for engaging armored vehicles and supporting ground troops.
The D-variant became available from the 1990s and was used by various countries. It demonstrates how electronics and data exchange became a significant addition to the existing armament and protection of a combat helicopter.
Japan put its own fleet of AH-64Ds into service with the Ground Self-Defense Force, with assembly by Fuji Heavy Industries. This version places the Apache in the context of the Japanese ground forces and their specific equipment.
