The Bell AH-1W SuperCobra was a twin-engine attack helicopter for the US Marine Corps. It built upon the narrow fuselage and tandem cockpit of the original Cobra but featured more powerful engines and expanded weapons capabilities. The W-version entered service in the 1980s.
Two T700 turbine engines provided the propulsion. The gunner sat in front of the pilot. A movable 20 mm cannon under the nose and pylons for rockets and guided anti-tank weapons gave the helicopter various attack options.
The SuperCobra was adapted for deployment from amphibious ships and for supporting Marines on the ground. The helicopter could escort ground troops, combat enemy vehicles, and relay reconnaissance information. Cooperation with other air and ground assets was essential in this regard.
AH-1Ws were used during the Gulf War and subsequent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, among others. This version represented an important intermediate step between the early Cobra and the four-bladed AH-1Z. It demonstrates the long-term evolution of a compact rotorcraft attack concept.
