A-7D/E Corsair II | 07247 | Hasegawa | 1:48
The Vought A-7 Corsair II was developed in the 1960s as a subsonic attack aircraft. The design utilized experience from the F-8 Crusader, but featured a shorter fuselage and a wing tailored for the attack role. The first flight took place in 1965.
A single non-afterburning engine limited fuel consumption. The A-7 could carry a significant weapons load and was equipped with navigation and attack systems that supported precision deployment. The distinctive air intake under the nose gave the aircraft its recognizable profile.
The U.S. Navy operated Corsair IIs from aircraft carriers, while the Air Force received its own land-based version. The type was deployed during the Vietnam War and later in other operations. The emphasis was on range, payload, and the accurate delivery of weapons.
The Corsair II was built throughout the 1960s to the 1980s and also found foreign operators. Its name referred to the earlier F4U Corsair, but technically it was a completely different jet aircraft.
The A-7D was intended for the U.S. Air Force and the A-7E for the Navy. Both received a TF41 engine and a 20 mm Vulcan cannon. Their equipment and features differed due to factors such as operation from land bases versus aircraft carriers.
