The M36B1 was an American tank destroyer that combined the 90mm gun of the M36 with the hull of an M4A3 Sherman. This version was created in 1944 to quickly make more heavily armed tank destroyers available. Production was limited to 187 vehicles.
A Ford GAA V8 petrol engine powered the Sherman chassis. The large, open-topped turret provided space for the 90mm gun and its crew. The open design offered good visibility, but made the crew vulnerable to artillery shrapnel and attacks from above.
The powerful gun improved capabilities against heavily armored German tanks. Tank destroyer units had to fire from suitable positions and be able to reposition when the situation changed. The vehicles were used in the final phase of the war in Europe.
The M36B1 demonstrates how the American industry combined existing hulls and turrets to meet an urgent need. The tank destroyer was therefore not a completely new vehicle, but a purposeful assembly of available parts.
