The RSO/PaK 40 was a German combination of a tracked vehicle and a powerful anti-tank gun, developed during World War II to provide effective anti-tank capability in difficult terrain. The vehicle was designed to move heavy weaponry and make it immediately deployable, especially in conditions where traditional vehicles struggled to operate.
The RSO was a compact tracked vehicle specifically developed for use in mud, snow, and rough terrain, particularly on the Eastern Front. Its open cargo area allowed the PaK 40 gun to be mounted directly onto the vehicle, creating a mobile anti-tank solution that could be quickly deployed and moved.
The vehicle was powered by a Steyr V8 petrol engine with an output of approximately 85 hp, allowing for a top speed of about 30 km/h. The track drive provided excellent traction and off-road capability, but the limited speed and open design made the crew vulnerable to enemy fire.
The armament consisted of the 7.5 cm PaK 40 L/46 anti-tank gun, one of the most effective German anti-tank weapons of the war. This gun could fire various types of ammunition and was capable of destroying heavily armored vehicles at long range.
