Airfix A11007A – Fairey Gannet AS.1/AS.4 | 1:48
The Fairey Gannet was a British maritime patrol aircraft that entered service with the Royal Navy in 1953. Developed for anti-submarine warfare during the early Cold War, it became an important part of NATO's maritime defence.
The Gannet was powered by a unique Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba turboprop engine with two coupled gas turbines and contra-rotating propellers. This design offered excellent range and made the aircraft particularly suitable for long-duration maritime patrol flights.
The crew consisted of a pilot, observer, and radar operator. Depending on the mission, the aircraft could be equipped with torpedoes, depth charges, and other weapons for anti-submarine warfare. In total, 351 aircraft were built, with the AS.1 and improved AS.4 being among the best-known variants.
The Fairey Gannet did not gain fame through aerial combat but through its important role during the Cold War. With its distinctive twin propellers and characteristic appearance, the aircraft became one of the most recognizable naval aircraft of its time.
This Airfix model is based on this extraordinary maritime patrol machine and represents an important chapter in British naval aviation of the 1950s and 1960s.
