With its elongated nose and significantly improved higher-altitude performance, the D-9 was initially mistaken for an entirely new aircraft type, causing confusion and unease among Allied pilots.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp data-end=\"1096\" data-start=\"659\"\u003eThe D-9 was equipped with a Junkers Jumo 213A liquid-cooled engine, giving it a top speed of approximately 685 km\/h (420 mph) and excellent climb performance. Its armament consisted of two 13 mm MG 131 machine guns above the engine and two 20 mm MG 151\/20 cannons in the wings. This combination made the Fw 190 D-9 particularly effective as an interceptor and fighter in the final stages of the war.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp data-end=\"1501\" data-start=\"1098\"\u003e Although it arrived too late in large numbers to influence the course of the war, the Fw 190 D-9 proved to be one of the best German fighters of its time.
